This project is a prototype for a simple medication reminder application targeted towards the tech-illiterate.
Project Overview
The product:
An app and responsive website to help remind the user to take their medicine.
Project duration:
Oct. 2022 - Nov. 2022
The problem:
Most reminder apps can be confusing to use for people who aren’t tech literate. They can overwhelm the user with options making them less likely to use one and more likely to forget to take their medicate.
The goal:
To make an application for those who want a simple to use reminder app, that walks them through the process of adding a medication reminder.
My role and responsibilities:
Researcher and Designer. User research, wire-framing, prototyping & final mockups.
User Research
Summary
To start the user research I looked at the options out there for reminder apps on the market and tried to figure out what was missing and what I could do with my app to stand out. Once I had a few ideas I talked to a range of potential users to see if it was something they might be interested in using.
Personas
Tom
Problem statement:
Tom is a retired man with some health issues who needs an easy and reliable tool to remind him to take medicine because if he misses a time it will affect his health.
Shelly
Problem statement:
Shelly is a realtor in her 30s who needs a simple app to reminder to take her birth control because other apps overwhelm her when she tries to setup a reminder.
Competitive Audit
Other apps have a lot of great features and there isn’t much space for another app on the market doing the same thing. Need to branch out and target a different section of the market.
Starting the Design
Ideation
I did a lot of wireframe sketches to figure out what direction i wanted to go in. These are some that had ideas I liked and to start from. In the end not everything made it into the app but it was a good starting point.
Digital Wireframes
I wanted to keep it very simple, so I went almost as simple as i could. Large easy questions and big simple buttons.
Low-Fidelity Prototype
Here is a map of the low-fidelity prototype for the app.

Usability Study Findings
In the usability test I discovered a few areas that could be improved on.
Usability Study Parameters
Study Type:
Unmoderated usability study
Location:
United State, Remote
Participants:
5 Participants - 3 Men 2 Women
Length:
20-30 Minutes
Don’t need profile
Users were asking about the profile setting in the upper right corner saying it seems like an extra complication.
Cancel Button Needed
Users wanted a way to cancel out of the process.
Back Button Needed
Users wanted a way to go back to the previous page in case they needed a change.
Refining the Design
Mockups
Removed profile icon, added back and cancel button. Also added some color for some accessibility. Added some color to the main reminder screen and color coded button buttons for better accessibility.
High-Fidelity Prototype
Accessibility Considerations
Coloring
Use of color to symbolize stop and go, and high contrast colors so everything is easy to read.
Bold Text
Used large bold text so everything is easy to read on a small phone screen.
Alert Options
I included different options for how to be alerted for the reminder. Not only do you have the option to be notified by sound but also options like flashing the light on the phone, or getting an automated call.
Responsive Design
Landing Page
Mobile, tablet and desktop versions of the landing page for the app. Both give a little information and links to the app stores.
Going Forward
Takeaways
Impact:
Gives people another option on how to be reminded to take medication. Aimed at helping older generations who aren’t as tech savvy and need help remembering to take their prescriptions.
What I learned:
I learned it isn’t easy coming up with new solutions to something that already has options available.
Next Steps
First
My next step would be to do more usability tests to see if there are more areas to improve.
Second
I want to add some sort of incentive to use this app. One idea is to reward the user for using the app. I would like to implement that in some way.
Third
Another addition I had in mind and would like to implement is to have other alert options with smart devices. Like turning on a light switch or playing music as a reminder.
